I tutor students in Capitola, Santa Cruz, Aptos, Live Oak, etc. Most of my clients are SAT and PSAT prep students; however, I tutor LSAT prep too, and some of those students are over fifty years old! So I tutor a wide range of students.
The SAT consists of three sections: SAT Math, SAT Critical Reading, and SAT Writing. The SAT math section contain math that is unlike most of the math kids do in school; mastery of the SAT math section requires alternative ways of solving complex word problems. SAT Math tests how well students understand mathematical concepts, not just how well they can memorize formulas.
In order to get a high score on the SAT Critical Reading section, students must have a large vocabulary (in fact, less than 10% of students do) and must be able to understand dense material. I teach reading strategies, grammar rules, and key vocabulary words that improve reading comprehension.
The SAT Writing section is my favorite part of the test. There are multiple-choice questions which test a variety of grammar rules (but certainly not all of the grammar rules in English! Perhaps it tests only 15 or 20 grammar rules.), and there is an essay part which is unlike any of the writing prompts most kids do in high school. I think the SAT Writing is the easiest section to improve but math is easy too. Regardless, the critical reading section is the hardest one to improve.
I also tutor LSAT Prep. I tutor LSAT games, LSAT arguments, and LSAT reading comprehension.
