I tutor SAT/PSAT, ACT, and LSAT Test Prep in the Santa Cruz Area (California).
I have tutored off and on since I was a college student in 1997. Over the years, I have tutored hundreds of students, and most of those students were SAT Prep students. So, not surprisingly, I know the SAT backwards and forwards. I tutor all 3 sections of the SAT: SAT Math, SAT Critical Reading, and SAT Writing (multiple-choice and essay). I have also tutored many dozens of ACT students and quite a few LSAT students (the LSAT is my favorite test!).
All of these tests are very coachable/tutorable. Each of these tests focuses on a very limited range of topics. Learn those areas, and your score will go up dramatically. Master those areas, and you get an impressive score. When I took the new SAT I in early 2009 (I quit teaching school in 2008), I got a 2390 (out of 2400 points). In other words, one wrong answer kept me from getting a 2400. Since then I have spent thousands of hours tutoring SAT Prep. I know the SAT so well I could make my own test and nobody would be able to tell the difference between mine and the real thing.
Luckily, I don't have to. The 2nd edition of "the Official SAT Study Guide" by The College Board, the maker of the test, is so good, it should be the first book any SAT student starts studying. There are real tests in it and the other tests are exactly like the real ones. Other SAT books fall short of being like the real thing. In fact, the Barron's SAT book, except the vocabulary section, is terrible.
